Below is a list of tried and true things to bring that are recommended for you to buy and bring with you on your trip to North Caicos and Middle Caicos. Most all items were chosen because of the ability to save weight and space in your luggage and as you travel around the islands.
Fun in the Sun & Water
- Beach Towels – lightweight microfiber and sand shedding are the best to dry quickly and to reduce the amount of sand you bring back
- Beach Bag – you’ll want something to carry all your beach necessities and beach combing finds
- Face Shields – these are super versatile offering up sun protection to your face and neck and can also double as a headband
- Water Shoes – these are amazing to have and take you from the beach to the water to the boat or kayak and more – make sure you opt for the hard-bottom shoes to offer protection against sea urchins and ironshore
- Snorkel Gear – look for the right size and a carrying bag that comes with
- Dry Bag – these bags are amazing if you plan to do any sort of water adventures where you want to keep your phone and clothing dry
Sun Protection
- Sunscreen – reef safe, waterproof and high SPF are recommended as you don’t want to get burned to a crisp and remember non-aerosol for the plane
- Hat (wide brim preferably) – there are simply times when sunscreen alone just can’t block the powerful rays of the Caribbean sun
- Sunglasses – yes, your eyes can get burnt too, so bring a pair of good, polarized sunglasses along for protection that fit well for all your adventures and activities
- Long-Sleeve Shirt – again, no matter how much sunscreen you slather on, you’ll want to have a breathable, quick-dry, and sun-shielding long-sleeve shirt to cover up with
Bug Protection
- Bug Spray – mosquitoes can get bad after it rains or in the mornings and evenings, so be sure to have this on hand at all times
- No Seeum Oil – these little guys can leave behind some terribly itchy bites, so do all you can to prevent them by coating your skin with some form of oil on calm days, at dusk and at dawn
- Post-Bite Relief – honestly the best invention I’ve ever used for post-bug bite relief is the Bug Bite Thing Suction Tool
- Long-Sleeve Shirt & Pants – ultimately clothing might offer up the best protection on calm days and at dusk and dawn
Eat & Drink
- Cooler – a soft, backpack cooler offers up really great utility and versatility for all your adventures – we recommend one that is waterproof, collapsible and that can double as a dry bag
- Ice Packs – you’ll need all the “cool” you can get to keep your snacks and drinks cold and these are perfect to pack and then fill up and freeze once you get to the island
- Insulated Metal Water Bottle – keep your drinks cold and ice cubes solid – this is a must have item
- Ice Cube Trays – lightweight and easy to pack (or buy on island) and help to keep your drink cooler, longer – cheaper than buying bags of ice
- Reusable Grocery Bags – plastic sacks are banned from the island so help keep TCI beautiful and bring some cloth bags with to do your grocery shopping
- Snacks & Drinks – choose snacks that withstand heat and squishing (no chocolate or chips) and drinks that offer multi-purpose use (like Capri Sun, Hi-C, or bottled water) that can be frozen the night before and help to keep the contents of your cooler, cool
For the Adventurous
- Hammock – tie it up and stay awhile since not many beaches on North or Middle have seating
- Camping Grill – stay out all day long when you can cook your fresh catches right on the beach
- Ugly Stick Telescopic Fishing Poles – breakdown poles travel well and are handy if you want to do some on-shore fishing
- Gloves – these offer both sun protection and injury protection if you are going out fishing on a boat, lobstering or lion fishing
- Filet Knife – never be without a good, sharp knife to help you clean your catchings
- Pole Spear – try your hand at killing lion fish to help save the reefs (lion fish make for some great eating)
- Mesh Bags – keep your lobster and lion fish contained in an easy-to-carry and quick-to-dry bag
